What Will They Be Saying About What We Are Doing?
Mark 14
9 Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her.
Intro: I have been watching interviews and commentaries on the life of Charlie Kirk.
People cannot say enough about what all he did in his life.
He came on the scene at the age of 17.
He died at the age of 31.
So – the question tonight is this - What Will They Be Saying About What We Are Doing?
Mark 14 – this passage is a demonstration of this woman’s love for the Lord.
This passage is about one woman’s work to show how much she loved God.
This passage is NOT about the work that Jesus did.
(the whole world could not contain what all Jesus did during His ministry.)
This passage is NOT about what God was doing in her life or had done.
This story is about what she did.
· Matthew 5:16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
If you and I are living a life of good works, it will be noticed and it will reflect our love for God and bring Him glory.
MEMORIAL: a memorial (that by which the memory of any person or thing is preserved), a remembrance
What will people say about you after you are dead and gone?
If you ask, you’ll get a wide variety of responses.
Some are super spiritual.
Some are a complete cop-out.
But the question still stands: What Will They Be Saying About What We Are Doing?
This woman is an inspiration to me.
Let’s look at why Jesus knew that she would be.
I. The Extravagance of Her Work
3 And being in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at meat, there came a woman having an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard very precious; and she brake the box, and poured it on his head.
She wasn’t worried about doing too much.
She wasn’t worried about the cost.
She spent almost a year’s wages on one act of worship.
She invested a year of her labor and work on this ONE display of love for the Lord.
There was no hesitation.
There was no reserve.
There was no calculators and spreadsheets and accounting experts weighing in on it.
The determining factor was her love for Jesus – nothing else mattered.
II. The Expectations of Her Work
4 And there were some that had indignation within themselves, and said, Why was this waste of the ointment made?
5 For it might have been sold for more than three hundred pence, and have been given to the poor. And they murmured against her.
NOTE: The people that are around you will not always approve of your work or love for God.
They didn’t mind her giving Jesus something, but just not THAT much.
They thought her time and money would have been better spent on other things and other people.
III. The Exceptionalism of Her Work
6 And Jesus said, Let her alone; why trouble ye her? she hath wrought a good work on me.
The Judgement Seat of Christ is to determine if our works for God were good or not.
2 Corinthians 5
· 9 Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him.
· 10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.
It was a PUBLIC WORK – vs. 3, 4 (this work was done in front of complete strangers…)
NOTE: Matthew 5 is crystal clear about this.
· 14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
· 15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
· 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
It was a PROTECTED WORK – “…let her alone; why trouble her?”
It was a PERSONAL WORK – “…she hath wrought…”
It was a PRAISED WORK – “…a good work…”
IV. The Extent of Her Work
8 She hath done what she could: she is come aforehand to anoint my body to the burying.
Can people look at what you are doing for God and say that?
Can God say it?
Can God look down at mine and your labor; our investment; our love, and say, “She hath done what she could!”
How many of God’s people do NOTHING?
How many do just enough to say they did something?
How many do just enough to get by and ease their conscience?
V. The Expanse of Her Work
9 Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her.
The whole world is talking about this woman’s work.
The whole world is reading about her sacrifice and her love for the Lord.
2,000 years later, we are preaching about “…this also that she hath done…”
What will people be saying about what you and I are doing?
MEMORIAL: a memorial (that by which the memory of any person or thing is preserved), a remembrance
Conclusion: Years from now, What Will They Be Saying About What We Are Doing?
What will people remember about our love for Jesus?
What will people be saying about our sacrifice?
What will they be saying about our contribution to the Lord?
Will it be inspiring?
Will it be motivating?
Will it be a lesson in love?
Will it be a lesson in personal sacrifice?
Our life should be one that “provokes one another to love and good works.”
To do that, it should be an example of LOVE and GOOD WORKS.
