The Secret to a Happy Life
Psalms 144:15
Intro: It’s funny how everybody knows that kids are constantly concerned about being happy.
McDonalds even has a menu for children, and it is called “a happy meal.”
Just adding the word “happy” to something makes it better!
The world has an idea of what makes a person happy.
Yet, we live in a day when people are more miserable than ever before.
People are turning to alcohol and drugs in order to escape their life.
Suicides are at an all-time high.
It’s time we recognize that sinful man and the world has no idea how to make people happy.
They can generate PLEASURE – but that is not the same thing as making a person happy.
The Bible says that there is pleasure in sin FOR A SEASON.
God’s Word tells us clearly what it takes to have a happy life.
I. Having God as your Lord
· Psalms 144:15 Happy is that people, that is in such a case: yea, happy is that people, whose God is the LORD.
II. Hoping in the Lord
· Psalms 146:5 Happy is he that hath the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the LORD his God:
· Proverbs 16:20 He that handleth a matter wisely shall find good: and whoso trusteth in the LORD, happy is he.
III. Holding onto Wisdom
· Proverbs 3:13 Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding.
· Proverbs 3:18 She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her.
IV. Having Mercy on the Poor
· Proverbs 14:21 He that despiseth his neighbour sinneth: but he that hath mercy on the poor, happy is he.
V. Having the Fear of God
· Proverbs 28:14 Happy is the man that feareth alway: but he that hardeneth his heart shall fall into mischief.
VI. Heeding the Law of God
· Proverbs 29:18 Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.
VII. Humility to Serve Others
John 13
· 13 Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.
· 14 If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet.
· 15 For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.
· 16 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him.
· 17 If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.
VIII. Hardships for Christ’s Sake
· 1 Peter 3:14 But and if ye suffer for righteousness’ sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled;
· 1 Peter 4:14 If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified.
James 5
· 10 Take, my brethren, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience.
· 11 Behold, we count them happy which endure.
