Stewards of the Mysteries

1 Corinthians 4:1 Let a man so account of us, as of the ministers of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God.

Intro: We were studying this passage in Bible College last week, and this verse has been lingering in my mind.

The way Paul started out this chapter intrigued me.

I. The Reference of the Steward

Paul referred to himself and those laboring with him in several distinct ways.

The first one was “as of the ministers of Christ.”

It is the Greek word for servant

1a) an underrower, subordinate rower

1b) any one who serves with hands: a servant

The other reference is that of a steward.

A steward is a one that serves but has been entrusted to be over the master’s business.

It is word that is extremely expressive.

The Greek Lexicon says the word STEWARD in our text is the manager of household or of household affairs

But that is not all. It is far more involved than that.

· 1a) esp. a steward, manager, superintendent (whether free-born or as was usually the case, a freed-man or a slave) to whom the head of the house or proprietor has entrusted the management of his affairs, the care of receipts and expenditures, and the duty of dealing out the proper portion to every servant and even to the children not yet of age

· 1b) the manager of a farm or landed estate, an overseer

· 1c) the superintendent of the city’s finances, the treasurer of a city (or of treasurers or quaestors of kings)

Those of us that are saved are called stewards in the Scripture.

The Apostle Paul wasn’t the only one that was a steward.

We all are!

II. The Revealing to the Steward

Read Matthew 13:10-17

  • 10 And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables?

  • 11 He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.

  • 12 For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath.

  • 13 Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand.

  • 14 And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive:

  • 15 For this people’s heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.

  • 16 But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear.

  • 17 For verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.

READ 1 Corinthians 2:6-13

  • 6 Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought:

  • 7 But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory:

  • 8 Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

  • 9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.

  • 10 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.

  • 11 For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.

  • 12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.

  • 13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

III. The Responsibility of the Steward

The responsibility of this matter of being a “steward of the mysteries” is not a mystery.

Our job is not to keep it hidden.

Our duty is not to keep it locked up out of sight.

Our obligation is not to insure that the mysteries of God remain mysteries.

Our responsibility is to declare and make known the mysteries of God.

The fact that we have been given the truth obligates us to share it.

  • Luke 12:48 …For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.

A. The Mystery of God

Psalm 145

  • 10 All thy works shall praise thee, O LORD; and thy saints shall bless thee.

  • 11 They shall speak of the glory of thy kingdom, and talk of thy power;

  • 12 To make known to the sons of men his mighty acts, and the glorious majesty of his kingdom.

Colossians 1

  • 25 Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God;

  • 26 Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints:

  • 27 To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:

  • 28 Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus:

Colossians 2

  • 1 For I would that ye knew what great conflict I have for you, and for them at Laodicea, and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh;

  • 2 That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ;

  • 3 In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

B. The Mystery of the Gospel

Romans 16

  • 25 Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began,

  • 26 But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith:

Ephesians 6

  • 18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

  • 19 And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel,

  • 20 For which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.

  • Colossians 4:3 Withal praying also for us, that God would open unto us a door of utterance, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in bonds:

Ephesians 3:2-10

  • 2 If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward:

  • 3 How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words,

  • 4 Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ)

  • 5 Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit;

  • 6 That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel:

  • 7 Whereof I was made a minister, according to the gift of the grace of God given unto me by the effectual working of his power.

  • 8 Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ;

  • 9 And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:

  • 10 To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God,
