I’ve Got Something I Want To Say To You
Luke 7:40
Intro: In this story, we see:
A. The Sinner – vs. 37 “And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner,”
B. The Saviour – vs 37 …when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee’s house
C. The Skeptic – vs. 39 …this man, if he were a prophet
D. The Story – vs. 40 ...I have somewhat to say unto thee...
In verse 36, the Bible tells us that they sat down to meat.
This story took place around the table.
As they sat there, this woman came in and started weeping and washing and wiping the feet of Jesus.
The Pharisee got critical and spake within himself. Jesus heard it, and spoke out loud.

I. The Debt that was Indisputable
In this parable, Jesus was making several important points.
According to verse 39, the Pharisee was indignant at this woman, “for she is a sinner.”
What he didn’t realize was that he was also a sinner.
In his self-righteous, conceited heart, he failed to understand one very important fact.
Yes – this woman was a sinner. Verse 37 established that.
She was a known sinner, a sinner with a public record of sinful behavior and activity.
Everybody in town knew she was a sinner.
But this self-righteous Pharisee forgot one key truth – he was too!
He was a Pharisee, but he was a sinner.
He was a religious leader, but he was a sinner.
He had a nice house to invite Jesus into, but he was a sinner.
He was sitting at the same table with the Son of God, but he was a sinner.
Verse 42 says that a certain creditor had TWO DEBTORS.
There is no question that this woman was a sinner. But so was he!
She might have had a bigger debt, but he was still a debtor.
The sin debt is simple; everybody is a debtor.
This expert on the Old Testament Law had forgotten one key truth:
· James 2:10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.
Whether you are a drunkard or a deacon, you are a sinner.
Whether you are a prostitute or a preacher, you are a sinner.
It doesn’t matter if you are in the mire or in the choir, we are all sinners.
The amount of debt is irrelevant.
The sin debt that was owed was still a debt.
“But preacher, I’m a good person!” There are millions of good people in hell.
“But preacher, I love everybody.” There are millions of good neighbors in hell.
“But preacher, I go to church!” There are preachers and preacher’s wives in hell today.

II. The Demand that was Impossible – vs. 42 “…they had nothing to pay…”
He didn’t say they didn’t have enough.
He said they had nothing.
They couldn’t even come close.
They were totally incapable of paying the debt.
This is such a powerful truth.
There is no amount of good works or good deeds that can pay the debt.
You might think that if you do enough good works or serve God long enough that it will be sufficient.
· Isaiah 64:6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.
Titus 3
· 4 But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared,
· 5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
· 6 Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;
· 7 That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
The songwriter that wrote Rock of Ages got it right!
1. Rock of Ages, cleft for me, Let me hide myself in Thee;
Let the water and the blood, From Thy wounded side which flowed,
Be of sin the double cure, Save from wrath and make me pure.
2. Not the labor of my hands Can fulfill Thy law’s demands;
Could my zeal no respite know, Could my tears forever flow,
All for sin could not atone; Thou must save, and Thou alone.
3. Nothing in my hand I bring, Simply to Thy cross I cling;
Naked, come to Thee for dress; Helpless, look to Thee for grace; Foul, I to the fountain fly;
Wash me, Savior, or I die.
One of the greatest hymns in the songbook asks the question, “What Can Wash Away My Sin?”
1 What can wash away my sin? Nothing but the blood of Jesus.What can make me whole again? Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
3 Nothing can for sin atone: nothing but the blood of Jesus.Naught of good that I have done: nothing but the blood of Jesus.
4 This is all my hope and peace: nothing but the blood of Jesus.This is all my righteousness: nothing but the blood of Jesus.

III. The Deliverance that was Incredible
FRANKLY FORGAVE: to do a favour to, gratify, to show one’s self gracious, kind, benevolent, to grant forgiveness, to pardon, to give graciously, give freely, bestow
The doctrine in this short story is incredible.
The creditor had two men that owed debts that they could not pay.
He had two options; send them to debtors’ prison until they could pay it, knowing they never would or could.
Or just forgive them of the debt and wipe it clean.
And that is what Jesus did on the cross of Calvary.
Luke 23
· 33 And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.
· 34 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.
· 35 And the people stood beholding. And the rulers also with them derided him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself,
Colossians 1
· 12 Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:
· 13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:
· 14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:
Colossians 2
· 13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;
· 14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;
· 15 And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.
Ephesians 1
· 6 To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.
· 7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;
I am glad that today, I can say with the songwriter, “My Sins are Gone!”
1 You ask me why I’m happy, so I’ll just tell you why, because my sins are gone;And when I meet the scoffers, who ask me where they are, I say, my sins are gone.
Chorus They’re underneath the blood, on the cross of calvary, as far removed as darkness is from dawn;in the sea of God’s forgetfulness, that’s good enough for me, praise God, my sins are gone.
2 It was at the old-time altar, where God came in my heart, and now my sins are gone;The Lord took full possession, the devil did depart, I’m glad my sins are gone.

IV. The Demonstration that was Instructional
A. A Demonstration of a Love that was Superior
· 42 Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most?
· 43 Simon answered and said, I suppose that he, to whom he forgave most. And he said unto him, Thou hast rightly judged.
· 44 And he turned to the woman, and said unto Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered into thine house, thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head.
· 45 Thou gavest me no kiss: but this woman since the time I came in hath not ceased to kiss my feet.
· 46 My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment.
· 47 Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little.
B. A Demonstration of a Life that was Salvaged
· 47 Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little.
· 48 And he said unto her, Thy sins are forgiven.
· 49 And they that sat at meat with him began to say within themselves, Who is this that forgiveth sins also?
· 50 And he said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace.
Conclusion: Question: Does your love for Jesus match the level of forgiveness that you’ve received from Him?
No doubt He has forgiven you much; do you love much?
Have you ever given Him the opportunity to forgive you of your sins? Have you accepted Him as your Savior?
