How Could You Sleep Through All This?
Jonah 1
Intro: Many of God’s people are asleep.
Tonight is the Super Bowl, and there are churches that closed their doors for the game.
Some churches are showing the game AT their church.
And for churches, like ours, that didn’t close, church members stay home to watch.
Someone may ask – Pastor, why are you making such a big deal out of this?
My answer: You’re the one that traded a meeting with God to watch Patrick Mahomes – not me!
My question to them is this – How could you sleep through this?
How could you sleep while…
A. Sanctioned with a Divine Mission
B. Subjected to Destructive Mayhem
C. Surrounded by Dying Men
The sleep is manifested by…
I. A Calculated Disobedience to the Word of God
· 1 Now the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,
II. A Complete Disregard to the Call of God
· 2 Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me.
· 3 But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.
III. A Complacent Disinterest In the Power of God
· 4 But the LORD sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken.
· 5 Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man unto his god, and cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it of them. But Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep.
V. A Carnal Disconnect of the Heart of God – the people of Ninevah
· Jonah 4:11 And should not I spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more than sixscore thousand persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle?
