Breakfast with Dad

Genesis 22

·        3 And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him.

·        4 Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off.

·        5 And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you.

Intro: For three days, Abraham and his son had the opportunity to travel together, camp together and eat together. This morning is Breakfast with Dad here at our school. I am grateful for the dads that took off work to be here this morning. For the first time, I realized that Abraham and Isaac had the unique opportunity to wake up every morning, build a fire, cook their food and eat breakfast together while on this amazing trip. I couldn’t help but wonder, what did they talk about?

I am pretty sure they did not talk about:

·        The latest version of Grand Theft Auto.

·        The scores from last night’s ballgame.

·        The latest brand of high-dollar tennis shoe.

·        The kind of car he wanted to buy.

·        Isaac wasn’t playing on his cellphone while Abraham was checking the stock market.

There might have been a few dad jokes. Dads always have a joke.

JOKES:

·        What do you call a camel that cries a lot? A Humpback-wail.

·        Why are camels hard to see? They use camel-flage.

·        What is a baby camel’s favorite nursery rhyme? Hump-ty dumpty.

We cannot be sure what they talked about, but I have some ideas.

Maybe Abraham talked to Isaac about…

I. His Conversations with God – vs. 1

I am sure that Abraham had plenty of time to talk about his many conversations with God.

From the first time we discover Abraham back in chapter 12, God is speaking to him.

·        Genesis 1:1 Now the LORD had said unto Abram,

In Genesis 17, from verse 1 to verse 22, God and Abraham had a conversation.

In chapter 18, the Bible says that the Lord appeared unto him.

They had several more long conversations.

In verses 22–33, Abraham talked to God about the impending destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah.

·        Genesis 18:33 And the LORD went his way, as soon as he had left communing with Abraham: and Abraham returned unto his place.

Dad, I’ve got two questions for you:

               1. Does God talk to you?

               2. Do you talk to your children about these conversations?

Maybe Abraham talked to Isaac about…

II. His Consecration to God – vs. 5

·        5 And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you.

The first time we find the word WORSHIP in the Bible it is here in Genesis 22:5.

But this was not the first time that Abraham had worshipped.

·        He built an altar unto the Lord all the way back in Genesis 12:7.

·        In the very next verse, he builded an altar and called on the name of the Lord.

·        He returned to the altar in Bethel and again called on the name of the Lord in Genesis 13:4

·        In Genesis 14, verse 20, he gave his tithes to the Melchizadek, king of Salem.

·        In chapter 19, Abraham stood before the Lord. (vs. 27)

The Bible says in verse 29 that God spared Lot and his family because God remembered Abraham.

Maybe Abraham talked to Isaac about…

III. His Confidence in God – vs. 8

Abraham’s faith in God is first seen all the way back in Genesis 12.

Genesis 1

·        1 Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee:

NOTICE his response in verse 4.

·        4 So Abram departed, as the LORD had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and Abram was] seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran.

Abraham had no idea where he was going.

Hebrews 11 tells us that.

·        8 By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.

No GPS. No designated destination. Just go.

Imagine telling your wife your family is moving.

His confidence in God was a major part of his life.

That is one reason why they are on this trip to start with.

·        8 And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.

Hebrews tells us that Abraham believed God was able to raise his son from the dead.

Why? Because God had already told him that He would make a great nation from Isaac.

Hebrews 11

·        17 By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son,

·        18 Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called:

·        19 Accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure.

Conclusion: The relationship that Abraham had with God was so remarkable that we are still talking about it thousands of years later.

The book of James, written by the brother of Jesus, said it like this:

·        James 2:23 And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.

Jesus said:

·        John 15:14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.

Dad, what do you talk about with your children? Your Conversations with God? Your Commitment? Have your talked to them about your faith and confidence in God?

When did you put your faith in Him? If you did, it started when you got saved.
