The Child Jesus

Luke 2:40-52

Intro: The idea that you cannot do certain things because you’re a kid is the common point in many young people’s conversations.

They can’t wait until they get older so they can do this or do that.

What you don’t realize is how much you can do when you are a child.

Jesus was 100% God, but he was also 100% human.

This is impossible for us to understand, but it is what the Bible teaches.

Jesus was a child once.

We can learn some things about him as a child that should inspire every one of you.

He Grew

·        40 And the child grew…

It is a natural thing to grow.

You get older. You get taller. You get bigger.

               1. You should also grow mentally.

Twelve year old boys shouldn’t act like six-year-old boys.

               2. You should grow spiritually.

The longer you are saved, your life should reflect maturity in the Lord.

               3. You should grow emotionally.

Twelve-year-old girls should cry at everything they cried about when they were four.

Grow up!

               4. You should grow financially.

You should learn how to spend money; not waste money; not buy everything you see.

Save some money; learn the value of the dollar.

Learn to be thankful for the things that your parents provide for you.

Grow up!

He Waxed Strong in Spirit

·        40 …and waxed strong in spirit,

SPIRIT: the rational spirit, the power by which the human being feels, thinks, decides

The part of you that makes decisions; how you think, feel, etc.

He waxed strong – as a child!

He was Filled with Wisdom

·        40 … filled with wisdom:

Wisdom is normally associated with old people.

Grayheaded and white headed people are considered wise.

But Jesus – as a child – was filled with wisdom!

You can be too – if you want it!!

If any man lack wisdom, let him ask of God.

With all thy getting, get wisdom!!!

·        Proverbs 4:5 Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth.

·        Proverbs 4:7 Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.

He had the Grace of God upon Him

·        40 …and the grace of God was upon him.

With all the grace that God has poured into your life, can other people see any of it?You were saved by Grace. Can they see it?

You are kept by the Grace of God. Can other people see it upon you?

You are here today in this school because of the Grace of God. Are you a testimony of that?

He loved the House of God

·        46 And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple

He went to the temple without anyone making him go.

He didn’t have to be forced or coerced.

He didn’t have to be bribed or threatened.

He didn’t have to be dragged out of bed to go to church.

He went without anyone else making him go.

He was not afraid of spiritual leadership.

·        46 …sitting in the midst of the doctors

He didn’t avoid spiritual leadership.

He didn’t walk the long way around to keep from making eye contact.

He didn’t sit in the back corner with all the rebels and trouble makers.

He sat in the midst of the teachers.

He felt at home being surrounded by men that knew God and knew God’s Word.

He knew how to listen.

·        46 … both hearing them,

Over and over again, God’s Word says, “He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.”

Learning how to pay attention in church and listen is a highly commendable attribute.

Most young people have no idea how to listen.

They can’t pay attention unless it’s a game or nonsense.

They can’t listen to serious, sober conversations.

They can’t pay attention to spiritual admonition.

They are not interested.

It’s boring to them.

These doctors only had the Old Testament.

They were discussing the law, the Psalms, the prophesies – and Jesus was hearing them.

He knew how to ask questions.

·        46 …and asking them questions.

One of the greatest things in the life of a person is learning how to ask questions.

A hunger for knowledge and a thirst for truth is a major step to success.

He astonished people with his understanding.

·        47 And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.

There is nothing in the Bible that says that children cannot understand.

You can understand important things about life.

You don’t always have to be in the dark.

If you listen and you ask questions, you can have understanding.

He obeyed His parents.

·        51 And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them:

He grew in favor with God and man.

·        52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.
