Raised to Walk In Newness of Life
Romans 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
Intro: Today we celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. I am glad that I serve a Risen Savior!!
It was and still is the most significant miracle in all of history.
One of the most fascinating aspects of the resurrection was the verification of the Trinity in this miracle.
Jesus was raised from the dead by the power of all three persons of the Godhead.
Jesus raised Himself from the dead.
· John 10:17–18 “Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again. No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.”
God the Father raised Him
· Galatians 1:1 “Paul, an apostle, (not of men, neither by man, but by Jesus Christ, and God the Father, who raised him from the dead;)”
The Holy Spirit raised Him
· Romans 8:11 “But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.”
In Romans 6, we discover that Jesus is not the only one that has been risen from the dead.
Those of us that are saved have had the resurrection EXTENDED TO US.
I. The Resurrection that was Extended
Notice the text: Romans 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
Here’s the problem: We were dead because we were born sinners.
· Romans 5:6 – we were ungodly
· Romans 5:8 – while we were yet sinners.
· Romans 5:10 – we were enemies
· Romans 5:12 – we were all dead because we were all sinners
· Romans 5:18 – judgment came upon all men to condemnation
· Romans 5:19 – we were all made sinners by the sin of Adam
· Romans 5:10 – sin abounded
I also noticed how many times in Romans 6 that Paul referred to our resurrection; our salvation.
He used a variety of terms and phrases to describe it.
· Romans 5:1 Therefore being justified by faith
· Romans 5:2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand,
· Romans 5:5 …because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.
· Romans 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us,
· Romans 5:9 …being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.
· Romans 5:10 we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.
· Romans 5:11 …by whom we have now received the atonement.
And we could just keep going. It is all through chapter 6.
You know what else I noticed? The many times the word GIFT is used in Romans 5 and 6.
· Romans 5:15 But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.
· Romans 5:16 And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification.
· Romans 5:17 For if by one man s offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)
· Romans 5:18 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.
· Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
So what can we learn from Romans 5 and 6?
We were all sinners, ungodly, condemned, under the judgment, enemies of God
But because of the free gift of salvation that is extended to every person, we can be:
Justified by faith, granted access by faith into this grace, saved, justified, reconciled
When this happens we are RAISED FROM THE DEAD – just like Jesus was.
Ephesians 2
1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;
2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.
4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,
5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)
II. The Regeneration that was Experienced
The phrase “newness of life” speaks of a powerful biblical doctrine.
It is called the Doctrine of Regeneration.
Regeneration is the supernatural work of the Holy Spirit whereby a sinner, upon repentance and faith in Jesus Christ, is given new spiritual life—being “born again”—and made a new creature in Christ.
Regeneration is God giving spiritual life to a dead sinner, producing a new birth that results in a transformed life.
It is not a REFORMATION; it is a REGENERATION.
God creates a new nature, resulting in a changed heart, new desires, and the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit.
John 3:3 “Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
Titus 3:5 “According to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost.”
When God saved us, He began a work called REGENERATION in us.
Everybody that Jesus saves, Jesus CHANGES!
If there was no change, then there was no conversion.
2 Corinthians 5:17 “If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature…”
We are called a “new man.”
Ephesians 4:24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
Colossians 3:10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:
We have a new nature.
· 2 Peter 1:4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
We have a new Father.
· John 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
We have a new family.
· 1 John 3:14 We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.
III. The Repetition that is Exhibited
We were raised to WALK in newness of life.
Salvation is one time event that is performed supernaturally by God.
The Christian life however is a decision to follow Christ – one step at the time.
Daily – one step at a time – realizing we were RAISED TO WALK IN NEWNESS OF LIFE.
Among this long list of “new” things that God gives to a child of God, one is a NEW WALK.
· Ephesians 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
· Ephesians 4:1 I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called,
· Ephesians 4:17 This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind,
· Ephesians 5:8 For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:
· Colossians 2:6 As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him:
Notice how many times in Romans 6 that Paul refers to the walk of the new believer.
· 1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?
· 2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?
· 4 …even so we also should walk in newness of life.
· 6 …that henceforth we should not serve sin.
· 10 …he liveth unto God.
· 12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.
· 13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.
· 14 …sin shall not have dominion over you
· 17 …ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.
