Faith Like You Ain’t Never Seen!
Luke 7:1-10
I. Faith in the Witness of Jesus – vs. 3 “And when he heard of Jesus,…”
· 1 Now when he had ended all his sayings in the audience of the people, he entered into Capernaum.
· 2 And a certain centurion’s servant, who was dear unto him, was sick, and ready to die.
· 3 And when he heard of Jesus, he sent unto him the elders of the Jews, beseeching him that he would come and heal his servant.
Understand this: Jesus had NEVER done anything for this man.
He had never SEEN Jesus do anything for anybody.
All he had to go on was the witness of what Jesus had done.
He HEARD of Jesus – and that was enough for him send someone to beseech him to come.
We struggle to believe, even after all He had done for us.
We struggle with our faith, even after all we’ve seen Him do for others.
We’ve personally been changed.
We’ve seen people that God has changed.
We’ve watched God work for years, and we still doubt Him!
No wonder the Bible says, “Faith cometh by hearing…” Romans 10:17
II. Faith in the Worth of Jesus – vs. 4-7a
· 4 And when they came to Jesus, they besought him instantly, saying, That he was worthy for whom he should do this:
· 5 For he loveth our nation, and he hath built us a synagogue.
· 6 Then Jesus went with them. And when he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying unto him, Lord, trouble not thyself: for I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof:
· 7 Wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come unto thee…
In spite of his position, he did not have an attitude of entitlement.
In spite of his previous contribution, he did not have an elevated sense of self-worth.
He had a reputation for loving Israel.
He had built the Jews a synagogue.
But he didn’t act like God owed him anything.
The humility he demonstrated in his request was astounding!
The Romans were in control of Israel.
They dominated the Jewish people.
But he didn’t come to Jesus demanding favors.
He didn’t come to Jesus ordering Him to heal his servant.
Instead, he sent someone to beseech Jesus because he didn’t feel worthy.
They told Jesus he was worthy, but he didn’t think he was.
He didn’t even feel worthy for Jesus to enter in under his roof!
III. Faith in the Word of Jesus – vs. 7 “…but say in a word…”
He had faith that it would only take ONE word from Jesus.
Imagine having the faith to believe that anything you needed could be met with ONE word!
How many words do you have to hear to believe Him?
ILLUSTRATION: It is amazing at how many people today question the Word of God.
They argue with plain Bible verses that are crystal clear about a matter.
They debate and deny doctrines and precepts that are not the least bit ambiguous.
IV. Faith in the Work of Jesus – vs. 7b-10
· 7b …and my servant shall be healed.
· 8 For I also am a man set under authority, having under me soldiers, and I say unto one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.
· 9 When Jesus heard these things, he marvelled at him, and turned him about, and said unto the people that followed him, I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.
· 10 And they that were sent, returning to the house, found the servant whole that had been sick.
He didn’t think that Jesus needed to be on the premises to heal his servant.
He didn’t think that He would have to do it over and say more words.
He had absolute faith that whatever Jesus did, it would work.
It would be right.
It would be sufficient.
It never occurred to him that Jesus couldn’t do it.
He never once thought that Jesus would not be able to perform that miracle.
He had absolute faith in the work of God; that it would be perfect and complete.
Conclusion: No wonder Jesus marvelled!
· 9 When Jesus heard these things, he marvelled at him, and turned him about, and said unto the people that followed him, I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.
No wonder Jesus looked around and told the people that he had never seen faith like this!
What is your faith like?
How does it compare to this man’s faith?
