Delighting in the Word of God
Psalms 1:2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD...
Introduction: I have a hard time understanding how somebody can claim to be saved and not love the Word of God.
As a boy, I fell in love with my Bible.
It changed my life.
I am where I am today because of my love for the Word of God.
DELIGHT: pleasure, desire, longing
A righteous man will delight in the law of the Lord.
And – nobody will have to do it.
Nobody CAN do it.
You will delight YOURSELF in the Word of God.
Psalms 119:47 And I will delight myself in thy commandments, which I have loved.
Psalms 119:16 I will delight myself in thy statutes…
I. The Reasons for Delighting in His Word
A. It is the Words of God spoken to us
Matthew 4:4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
B. It is the Mind of God revealed to us
Philippians 2:5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
Isaiah 55:9,11 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.
C. It is the Character of God described for us
Isaiah 58:2 Yet they seek me daily, and delight to know my ways, as a nation that did righteousness, and forsook not the ordinance of their God: they ask of me the ordinances of justice; they take delight in approaching to God.
D. It is the Will of God conveyed to us
Psalms 40:8 I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart.
E. It is the Voice of God directing us
Psalms 119:105 Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
Proverbs 6:22 When thou goest, it shall lead thee...
F. It is the Treasure of God entrusted to us
Romans 3:2 ...unto them were committed the oracles of God.
Psalms 19:10 More to be desired are they than gold...
G. It is the Power of God transforming us
John 17:17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
II. The Results of Delighting in His Word
A. No Offences
Psalms 119:165 Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them.
B. No Bad Advice
Psalms 119:24 Thy testimonies also are my delight and my counsellors.
C. No Forgetting
Psalms 119:16 I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word.
D. No Wrong Turns
Psalms 119:35 Make me to go in the path of thy commandments; for therein do I delight.
E. No Fear
Psalms 56:4 In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear...
F. No Fruitlessness
Psalms 1:2-3 But his delight is in the law of the LORD... And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season...
G. No Regrets
Psalms 119:11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
Conclusion: You should make a decision now to read God’s Word every day.
